Summary

This text, published in association with the ABTA NAtional Training Board, provides a basic understanding of the nature, structure and organization of the tourist industry. It examines the role of tourism in the economic development of a country and explores the relationship between public and private sector tourism. The operations of each part of the industry - tourist attraction, carriers, accommodation, tour operation, retailing, tourist offices and ancillary services - are described in detail. The issues of the social and environmental impact of tourism on the receiving country are also addressed, and a new section on hospitality and design in tourism is included.
