Abstract:
South Africa's tourism industry is primarily based on its natural resources and products. The latter include fauna and flora and other natural resources that one can enjoy at any game farm or national, provincial or local park, to name but a few. Ecotourism thus remains the most significant type of tourism in South Africa. Interestingly enough, little is written on the topic in South Africa; the only major text on this topic is captured in this book, which consists of 14 chapters covering a wide range of topics. These include an analysis of what ecotourism is all about; how to achieve sustainability; what an ecotourism product entails; the role of cultural tourism and adventure tourism as part of ecotourism; environmental economics; how to develop hiking trails; and how to manage wetlands and parks and achieve sustainability. Leading academics in South Africa wrote the relevant chapters on these topics. Students, academics and practitioners will find this publication useful and insightful. The aim of the publication is to clarify and contextualise ecotourism through practical examples and clear guidelines.
