Abstract:
"This second edition again clearly demonstrates why World War I was the great turning point of the twentieth century. Lyons has drawn from his reservoir of recent literature to bring his account up-to-date. In the process, he has added a new section detailing the appalling existence of soldiers at the front, where they faced seemingly endless artillery barrages and bloody offensives across "no-man's land" while sharing their trenches with rats, lice, and the constant smell of death. He has also expanded his treatment of the home fronts, especially the role of women, as well as the air war. An extensively revised bibliographical essay, providing abundant suggestions for additional reading, is among other changes that appear throughout the book."--BOOK JACKET. "Numerous maps and illustrations also contribute to the reader's understanding of the military campaigns."--BOOK JACKET.
