Abstract:
Do genetically modified crops pose a threat to food, farming, even our freedom? This is the story of a man who makes a stand against the mighty multinational Monsanto. One day representatives of Monsanto visit Canadian farmer Percy Schmeiser and demand he surrender his crops. They sue him for 200,000 dollars, claiming he's illegally used their patented genetically modified seeds. Percy launches a nationwide campaign defending farmers' rights. He highlights crucial questions about GM crops, "terminator technology" and the dangers he believes GM poses to consumers and farmers alike. The case goes to Canada's supreme court. While the court finds he's not liable to pay a huge fine, it rules Monsanto owns an entire plant as a result of placing just one gene in it. Percy argues this raises more questions than it answers, including the biggest of all: "who owns life?". -- Container.
