Summary

The interaction between demography and the economy has been at the centre of the debate on the performance of African economics in recent years. Africa has in the past decade or so shown some of the highest population growth rates in the world, at a time when the economic crisis has become deeper and deeper. One school of thought blames the present economic crisis on radid population growth, another regards this growth as a stimulus to economic development. What emerges from this volume is that the quality of African labour is certainly a barrier to rapid economic growth. The rate of increase in the skill endowment of African labour is accordingly seen as both a constrain and a potential source for accelerated development in the future.
