Abstract:
"Tourism is a vital source of income for Kenya...Visitors come by the thousands in their 4 x 4s to Kenya's game reserves...But tourism has been bitter-sweet for the indigenous peoples. In the Masai Mara, there are specially built 'mock' villages where tourists buy their trinkets. Meanwhile the Masai people try to maintain their traditional farming lifestyles -- but are barely able to survive. For some, at least, there's more hope. More than 30 years ago, the lands of the Endorois tribe were confiscated by the Kenyan authorities to make way for a game park for tourists. Now the Endoroi have won the right to be recognized as the rightful owners of the territory." -- Container.
