The concept of professional crime enjoys a certain ambiguity within academic and popular culture, often overlapping with studies of organized crime, white-collar crime and, more recently, related sub-groups such as drugs and youth gangs. This book sets out to define the centrality of the concept, and unravel its ambiguous connotations. Research into the field poses problems, since professional criminals operate in an environment that thrives on its ability to avoid exposure. It stresses the need to provide a structural frame for the activities of professional criminals for, like all economic actors, they operate within a specific cultural milieu that is defined and framed by a coalition of historical precedents.
